Harvest Festival 2020

Today is Thanksgiving in the U.S., and that means it’s time for the harvest festival! Believe it or not, I hadn’t played this version on Thanksgiving since 2012! But I sure did today!

Robin’s replacement has finally moved in, and it’s Friga the penguin. She’s never been one of my favorites, and my dislike for snooty villagers in general has been well-documented. 😉

Friga: Hm. As I expected. I am Friga. It's a pleasure to meet you, brrrmph!

I headed over to the wishing well, where the harvest festival party was going on. Hank couldn’t wait for the main course to arrive…even though he (as a bird) is related to the main course. 😛

Hank: Let's have a toast for the... yet-to-arrive main course!

Puck, Sydney, Candi, and Belle was also there. Candi said she’s learning who was raised well, and who was born in a barn. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that she said this while sitting across from Belle. 🐄

Candi: This is the type of gathering where you find out just who was raised well and who was born in a barn.

Tortimer was also there, and he made it clear I was not welcome at his house!

Tortimer: Have you been out harvesting fruit for your own feast tonight? I hope so! You sure can't come over to my house!
Oh, that’s how we joke. He doesn’t even have a house!

I swiped the knife and fork from the table…

…and then I started looking for Franklin. It’s nice that you can get free hints about Franklin’s location from villagers. No silverware required for the hints (unlike in City Folk).

Tom: Have you seen the weirdo that's been hiding in acre B? What a crank, daahling.

I hunted down Franklin and gave him the knife and fork for some harvest furniture rewards.

Franklin: Whew! I really owe you one! These have an evil aura! They were waiting for me. I can sense these things.

I repeated this procedure over and over, finding Franklin a total of six times before I had my fill. 😛

Franklin: You are incredible! I love you! Got you now you pointy little fiends!

Franklin gave me a harvest dresser, harvest clock, harvest sofa, harvest rug, harvest bureau, and harvest chair. I sold the items for a total of 17,865 bells.

After that, I made a quick stop at the post office and then returned home. I hope you all had a happy Thanksgiving/harvest festival/turkey day! See you next time, gobble gobble!

Robin Flies Away

My bird friend Robin has flown away; I got her goodbye letter in the mail today.

My little Jeff, I can't stand for anyone to see me cry... You must know, that's the only reason I left without saying goodbye. Even now, the tears are... I can't bear it! Farewell! -Yours, Robin

At Nookington’s, Tom Nook is selling candy (since Halloween is almost here). It’s nice to see that we’re not limited to one piece per day like we are in New Horizons.

Five pieces of candy on sale at Nookington's.

When I visited Puck, I saw two faces (and two beaks) right next to each other, basically at the same angle, and both looking at me. It’s just one of those small, silly things I found amusing. Or maybe I just need some sleep. 😛

Puck: Whoa! Long time, no see! What rock

I ran into Belle outside, and she was up to her usual tricks. She wanted me to pay over 7k for a manor wall I didn’t need. Naturally, I told her no. Belle no!

Belle: All you have to do is pay me back. It'll be 7,414 bells for the manor wall (including handling charges).
You’re standing right next to me! Why would there be handling charges?

Gulliver was washed up on the beach, and I “saved him” by waking him up. He was very grateful, and he gave me a free shogi piece.

A large heart icon appears over Gulliver's head.

I was playing the game with my WaveBird controller, and I think my batteries were getting low. The controls were kinda cutting in and out. So when I spoke with Genji, I accidentally asked him for a favor. He wanted me to get his glasses case back from Emerald.

Genji: Lemme think... Yeah, OK! Go to Emerald's pad and get my glasses case back before I freak out!
I love that he said Emerald’s pad.

So I switched to a regular, wired controller, and then asked Emerald the frog about the case. Fortunately, she gave me the glasses (and didn’t send me on a wild goose chase). I took it back to Genji, and he gave me some stationery. He could totally tell I was disappointed by that reward.

Genji: ...You're not disappointed, are you? Of course not! Not you!
You sarcastic little stationery-giver.

Surprisingly, Robin’s replacement has not moved in yet. I believe that’s because my town had so many weeds, from not playing for 7 weeks. (Having lots of weeds prevents new villagers from moving in as often in this game.) Normally I go about 4-5 weeks between sessions, but my September entry was early in the month, and my October entry is late. But I cleaned up all the weeds I found, so things should get back to normal.

I recently went through my backlog of gameplay footage and assembled the best clips for a new GameCube Moments video, #16. If you haven’t seen it yet, I hope you’ll give it a watch and enjoy it. 🙂

20 Million in the Bank

Monday was Labor Day in the U.S., so that meant Tortimer could be found near the wishing well. He had various things to say about taking a break from working too hard, and stopping to enjoy life.

Tortimer: You really shouldn't work your fingers to the bone. If you do, you may just lose sight of what life's about!

I received a letter from Nookington’s in the mail, informing me of a special offer on a stunning toilet. However, I wasn’t interested, so I didn’t want to flush my money down the drain.

Hot News! We have a special offer today on a stunning toilet. As always, we have a wide variety of other items as well. Why not stop by? -Nookington's Department Store

I started up the game many times over the past week, looking for rain. But each time it wasn’t raining, I didn’t play long…typically just a couple minutes. But today (September 9th), I finally got the rain I was waiting for.

There was a letter from Anicotti in the mail; she has moved out of town. I’m okay with that.

To Jeff, I'm leaving town, and I'm not telling anyone where I'm going, but don't you worry! I'm off on a grand adventure that's totally going to rule! Wish me luck in my new life. Don't forget me! -Anicotti!

The rain must’ve really been bumming Candi out, because she was actually happy to see me! But then again, she was squinting, so maybe she thought I was someone else.

Candi: You're like, this kind of anti-rain-funk-mood-lifter-upper-type-person! That's so awesome!

It was quite a different story with Maple. She couldn’t even remember my name!

Maple: This is sort of awkward, but I can't recall your name. I remember your face, but...

On the beach, I saw Gulliver passed out…but I also saw a large fish shadow in the water. So I went fishing. 😉

Jeff, holding a coelacanth while Gulliver is passed out on the beach in the background: Would you look at that!

I caught a coelacanth and then woke Gulliver up. He gave me a Mouth of Truth, which is one of my favorite items of his.

I met my newest resident Patty the cow. Like most of the villagers in this game, she has lived in Forest before. In fact, she was one of my residents when I first started this blog in 2011!

Patty: Oh. Jeff, huh? Well, I'm Patty. Now that we've met, does that mean we're friends?

After circling my town, I emptied out my pockets (except for my fishing rod) and headed down to the ocean. It’s early September, and that means it’s the best time of the year to go fishing! I fished for about an hour and five minutes, and I was saving all the coelacanths to sell at the end. I was hoping to get a full 15 of them, but I only managed to catch ten of them on the night.

Ten coelacanths in my pockets.

Of course, I also caught a bunch of barred knifejaws and red snappers. And I earned a total of 462,000 bells in fishing tonight. That’s a good chunk of bells, to be sure…but it is less than I earned in my September fishing trip from last year.

In terms of catching the coelacanths that I saw, I was actually more efficient this year (catching 10 of 11 vs. 13 of 20 last year). But I saw nearly twice as many last year, and that’s what made the difference.

I think my strategy of trying to save up all the coelacanths to sell at once backfired this time. It means I made more frequent trips to Nook’s, and not always selling a pocketful. So I spent more time running back and forth, and less time fishing.

But oh well. It was still a productive night of fishing. And the money I earned bumped my bank account balance over 20 million bells!

Phyllis: Your balance is 20,035,168 bells.

There’s just a couple more days of great fishing before the sea bass return, so good luck to any GameCube fishers out there! 🙂
