Windsock Season

Before checking my mail today, I headed up to Nook’s to sell some stuff that was filling up my pockets. On my way, I saw some windsocks near Candi’s house.

A windsock.

If you’re not aware, windsocks appear in various spots around town during the first few days of May. While there isn’t anything you can do with them, they are nice to look at. It’s one of the many seasonal touches (like the cherry blossoms in April) that provide some variety throughout the year.

After returning home, I received a goodbye letter from Tad in the mail. It’s too bad he hopped away, since I would’ve rather seen Betty fly the coop. But Tad was here for five months, which is pretty long for one of the two “temporary” villagers.

Today is also Spring Cleaning Day, and Mom sent me 1,000 bells in the mail.

I found 10,000 bells while cleaning your dad's desk. Here's your share. -Mom
So my share is only 10%? Thanks, Mom.

The villagers in town all mention Spring Cleaning Day the first time you speak with them. Puck asked me to clean his room for him! That’s not how it works, penguin.

Puck: Saaay... Why don't you come clean my room for me?

Genji got a little too excited for spring cleaning. Either that, or he’s dripping with sarcasm.

Genji: You been cleaning like mad or what? Spring Cleaning Day sure is a wiiiiiiild time!

Belle told me I should clean my house in a tutu! Uh, no thanks.

Belle: Even if you're a total slob-and-a-half, you should at least clean your house TODAY, in a tutu!
I only wear my tutu for REALLY special occasions.

I found Mayor Tortimer near the wishing well; he told me to take all my trash to the dump when I was done cleaning. He said that makes it easier for everyone to find the good junk, when it’s all in one location. Meanwhile, Static was spinning in the background.

Maybe Static was trying to spin dry his cherry shirt. Once he was done, I spoke with him and he told me that he’s the Spring Cleaning Day enforcer! Ha!

Static: Get to cleaning, Jeff! You'd best remember that I'm the Spring Cleaning Day enforcer around here!
And if I refuse, then what? You’ll dry my laundry?

On my way back home, I ran into my new villager: Billy the goat. Even though his house is near Maple’s home, he was hanging up north of Tom’s house. He seems pretty nice so far.

Billy: Uh... Have we met before, dagnaabit? 'Cause I don't remember you...

After a quick stop at the post office, I hung out by some windsocks for a couple minutes. Just so that I could make this GIF. Happy Spring Cleaning Day, everyone!

Sadly, Daisy has moved out of town since the last time I played. I got her goodbye letter in the mail today.

Daisy's goodbye letter.

I found a new villager house near Belle’s house, and it’s right up against the river. I believe homes in later games can’t be right up against the river like this–they need a space in between. But the new river home belongs to Betty the chicken, and she was quite surprised to see me.

Betty: Eeeeek!
I guess Betty wasn’t ready.

I went inside to check out her house, and I saw that she has three chairs in here. As if she would ever use that many at once.

I boarded Kapp’n’s boat and took a trip out to the island. On the way, a dead body floated by and Kapp’n kept right on singing!

The show must go on.

I didn’t stay on the island long; I quickly returned to the mainland and tracked down Gulliver (who was actually alive, just unconscious). I talked to him repeatedly until he woke up and gave me a prize: Plate armor.

Gulliver: In the end, however, that slimy beast prevailed, and I was plunged into the deep, green sea...

When I spoke to Ursala, she told me that she painted the roof of my house! She used orange paint, but not just any orange paint–scented orange paint! She said it will smell like an orange grove! I don’t recall seeing this bit of dialogue before.

Ursala: I painted it orange! I used a scented paint, so it'll be like living in an orange grove!

I stopped by the post office and then the dump, where I found a pad of paper and a phonograph. I returned home and took a look at my new orange roof. It might not be my favorite color for a roof, but it’s not horrible…I may keep it for a while.

At least it matches the Browns helmet on my sign board.

See you next time!

Cherry Blossom Festival 2016

It’s early April, and that means it’s cherry blossom season! Aside from cedar trees and golden trees, all other trees (even fruit trees) will now be pink. In addition, cherry blossom petals fall from the sky. It’s one of the most beautiful times of year in Animal Crossing.

Pink trees and cherry blossoms.
Do you see me?

Down on the beach, I found a dead passed out Gulliver wedged into a corner.

Gulliver on the beach.
That looks painful.

After I woke him up, he started to tell me a dirty joke. But he caught himself before he got to the punchline. So instead, he gave me an item from a far-off land, a shogi piece.

Over at the wishing well, the main event was going on–the Cherry Blossom Festival. The festival runs for three days each year, April 5th through 7th. The atmosphere is very festive, with animals laughing, drinking, and dancing. Food is placed on the tables as well; it’s like an Animal Crossing party!

Ursala, at the Cherry Blossom Festival: During flower viewing, I become quite a discriminating glutton. (GIF)Genji was the dancing beast this year. He wanted me to lose my inhibitions on his bum! I think I’ll look for a better place.

Genji, at the Cherry Blossom Festival: You gotta lose those inhibitions, on my bum!

With all the food sitting out, I hope no flies get on it! But that wouldn’t be a problem for Tad–that just increases the amount of food available!

Tad, at the Cherry Blossom Festival: AND, there's plenty of food! Awesome, sluuuurp!

But leave it to Static to turn a happy occasion into something sad and depressing.

Static, at the Cherry Blossom Festival: Doesn't the sight of petals falling make you feel sad? ...Makes me feel kind of sad. Life is so fragile...Once I was done at the festival, I headed out to the island. I went over to the flagpole and raised the Cavs flag.

Wait, I’m raising a flag that’s a picture of another flag. Flagception?

I then went in Ankha’s house to see if she used the ivory piano she made me buy her last time. But her house was almost completely empty–nothing in here but a fossil and a spooky lamp.

Ankha's almost empty house.

So I had to speak to her to see what the story was. She again thanked me for the piano…

Ankha: Thank you so much for the ivory piano you gave me the other day.

…and she gave it back to me! After all that trouble I went to!

Ankha: But...I don't think it fits my room, you know? I hate to do this, but would you please take it back?

I gave her a few whacks with my net before I returned to the mainland and ended my game for the day. In case you’re wondering, nobody moved in or out of town this time.

If you’re interested, here is a video of the Cherry Blossom Festival that I recorded last year:
