Tia’s Birthday, Winter Update

Gulliver was in town today, and I helped him out by finding the five pieces of his communicator for him. In return, he’ll send me a gift in the mail tomorrow.

Today is Tia’s birthday, so I made my way to her party (where Agent S was also in attendance). I gave her a mama bear that I bought at the store. Happy birthday, Tia!

Tia: Oh, with cream! You brought me a Mama bear!

When I visited Louie, he started talking about “Buster,” and I was really confused. But he told me that Buster is the name of his favorite bicep.

Louie: When I'm trying to get an apple from a tree, Buster never fails me.

Shortly before 10:00 tonight, I downloaded the new winter update. I received a letter from Nintendo thanking me, and a yule log was attached to the letter.

The yule log from Nitnendo.

I went in my house and went to bed to speak with Luna. She informed me that we can now visit “surprise” (random) dream islands. She asked if I would like to allow other people to visit my island when choosing to be surprised, and I said yes.

Luna: No Dream Address is needed. I will simply pluck a pleasant dream from the internet for you to experience.

However, agreeing to this also updates your dream town immediately! So my dream is now updated with my house littered with turnips, my town littered with free DIY recipes on the ground, and at nighttime. (I usually like to update my dream after cleaning up and in the daytime). I’ll have to try to clean up and update it properly tomorrow or the next day.

After that, I headed to town hall to take advantage of some other new features of the update. I spoke with Tom Nook, and he told me about the ability to upgrade my item storage. It requires 500,000 bells…immediately. He does not offer a loan for this upgrade. I got the money out of my account and paid him. My storage will be available tomorrow morning.

Tom Nook: Now, for various reasons, I can't offer a loan for this. You'll have to pay 500,000 bells up front.

Next, I went over to the Nook Stop. I redeemed 1,800 Nook Miles for the six new hairstyles, and another 2,700 Nook Miles for the new reactions. They include “sit down,” “wave goodbye,” “take a picture,” “sniff sniff,” “work out,” yoga, “here you go,” excited, and “ta-da.”

I really like the new emotions, but I think “sit down” has got to be my favorite. It has me thinking that maybe I don’t even need those benches at the top of the cliffs I made recently. People could just sit on the edge of the cliff and watch sumo.

Do you have a favorite part of the new update? Let me know in the comments!

Just FYI, I’m planning on having Friday Night Forest this week…but instead of opening for friends, I think I’ll use a Dodo Code to open for anyone. I still want to give friends the first chance to come in, though. So if you’re a regular to FNF (or someone I know), please message me (on Twitter or elsewhere) ahead of time* so I can let you know the Dodo Code before I post it publicly. When I do post it, it will probably be on Twitter…although I might also post it to the end of Thursday’s blog entry.

*(Note: Please message me on Friday, shortly before 10pm Eastern time. I can’t make promises to anyone now, because I’ll need to see who’s available at that time. And please keep in mind, regular visitors to Forest will get the first chance to join.)

See you all next time!

Winter Update Trailer Thoughts

If you haven’t heard the news, Nintendo posted a new trailer for the winter update coming up on “Thursday” (which will likely be available Wednesday night). Check it out!

It looks pretty good overall, IMO. It’s interesting that they’ve changed the name of the Thanksgiving event from the Harvest Festival to Turkey Day. Perhaps because it’s spring in the southern hemisphere, and not time to harvest for them?

The Turkey Day event itself appears similar to the New Leaf event, where Franklin is the chef…and not the main course. However, one element of the early games has returned: the festive atmosphere with villagers around the tables! Nice touch.

Turkey Day in Animal Crossing: New Horizons.

Toy Day also seems much like the New Leaf version, where we help Jingle deliver presents. The update will also include some new hairstyles (including an afro and a bald head) and new reactions (including sitting)! We can also expand our storage from 1600 items to 2400. That’s amazing, but I haven’t even filled up my initial storage. 😀 I think I’d rather have some more design storage at this point, though.

The next update will come in late January, and it will add Pave (and presumably, Festivale). For a moment, I wondered why they didn’t mention a New Year’s event. But apparently, the New Year’s event was already in the game so it didn’t need to be added via update.

Unfortunately, there was no mention of multiplayer online games, the Roost, gyroids, or any of the many other features that are still missing in action. Although some sites are reporting that the ability to visit random dream towns is returning. That will be a nice addition, but it’s still a pretty minor thing.

Meanwhile, in Forest…

Flick was in town today, and his presence feels like a waste this time of year. I ended up selling him a few wasps I caught, but that’s it.

I shot down a couple of balloon presents, but I didn’t get any new recipes from them. One contained a pennant, and one gave me 5,000 bells.

Honestly, not much was going on in town tonight. But tomorrow is Tia’s birthday, so I’ll be back with another entry then. Never Stop Crossing!

Maple Leaves

Yesterday morning, I bought some turnips from Daisy Mae. She was charging just 90 bells per turnip, and I bought 1,100 of them (for a total of 99,000 bells).

Daisy Mae: You here to start your Sunday off with some fresh turnips?

When I checked the mail, I got my latest house evaluation from the Happy Home Academy. They gave me 136,962 points, which is just a slight improvement over last week. I have more work to do!

When I visited Hornsby, he told me that he wanted to be a superhero. But not just any superhero, a flying superhero! That would have to be some special cape to get a rhino off the ground!

Hornsby: I wanna be a superhero that can fly! If there's somebody who needs saving, I"ll swoop right in!

Today (November 16th) marks the start of maple leaf season. Maple leaves will now fall from the sky, and some of them can be caught and used for crafting. Also, Isabelle gave me a DIY recipe for a red-leaf pile.

This maple leaf is such a pretty red. It's like the exact color of fall!

I was surprised to get a letter from Daisy Mae in the mail. She sent me three bamboo shoots, although I had no use for them.

Celeste was in town tonight, and she gave me a recipe for a lunar surface!

SWEET! I learned a DIY recipe for a lunar surface!

My collection of space recipes is growing, slowly but surely. I made a lunar surface, and put it in my space room upstairs.

An updated look at my space room.

Agent S mentioned moving out of town, but I quickly ended that possibility.

After I woke Apple up from dreaming twice, she started talking about how she has trouble catching dragonflies. She even called them “little dorks!”

Apple: But the little dorks always zip off the second I get close!

She asked me to catch one for her, so I gave her a damselfly I already had in my pockets. She thanked me and gave me a floor light in return.

Near the sumo ring, I made more changes to the cliffs I added on Saturday night. I decided that I didn’t like them cutting through the archway, so I separated them a bit…even though that means people can’t jump from one to the other.

And because of limited space, the right one is just one level now. But both sides will have a bench where people can sit to watch sumo battles. And to make them look nicer, I added in some waterfalls. I still might make changes, but I do like this area better now than I did on Saturday.

My archway area.

See you all next time! Never Stop Crossing! 🙂
