TotK #1 – Great Sky Island

The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom came out this month, and I’ve recently started my adventure. Much like I did with Breath of the Wild, I plan on posting updates on my progress. As you may know, I tend to take my time with Zelda games; I don’t rush through. Also, I’ve avoided spoilers as much as possible, including many of Nintendo’s own tweets about the game. So a lot of things that you may know, will be surprises to me. So follow along and you’ll see these things through my eyes. 👀

Story-wise, the game starts out after the end of Breath of the Wild. Link and Zelda are investigating under the castle. Even though I just defeated Ganon in BOTW and saved the world, Zelda panicked after I encountered three measly little bats. Give me at least a little credit, princess. 😛

Zelda: You're not hurt are you, Link?
Chill. They were just early Halloween decorations.

But there was real danger lurking, and Link did get hurt a bit later on (after they made an interesting discovery). Link was injured, but fortunately, a mysterious stranger was around to lend a hand.

I ended up on a tutorial-like floating island (the Great Sky Island), where I eventually met Rauru, who is apparently a goat now. Well, a goat ghost, it seems. And I was surprised at his title… 😛

Rauru: Source of the Right Arm

He told me about the shrines on the island, and I started seeking them out. Each one taught me a new ability.

Ultrahand

This is not to be confused with Nintendo’s Ultra Hand toy (which was also featured in its own Wii game). The Ultrahand ability lets me grab and move items, much like Magnesis in Breath of the Wild…but without needing the objects to be metallic.

But more importantly, Ultrahand lets you attach items together to make things. Combine logs to make a raft or a bridge, or use other items you find to make tools. By combining a hook with this plank of wood, you can slide on these railings to another sky island.

Sliding down to another island.

I also used the ability to help out my first Korok. His backpack looks like it weights about 50 times his own body weight. Not sure how he gets anywhere. (Or maybe he doesn’t; that’s why he needed my help.)

Korok: I made it, thanks to you!

Fuse

The Fuse ability lets you attach objects to your weapons or shield to make them stronger. It may look silly to walk around with a boulder fused to your sword, but it is effective.

Link carries a sword with a boulder fused to it.

I’m just worried it may end up being tedious having to look for things to attach to your weapons throughout the whole game. This may be my least favorite of the new abilities so far.

Ascend

The third shrine took me a while to find, and I think I may have gone around the island in the wrong direction. 😛 Because when I finally made my across this wide river, I found a robot guy who was telling me I could use his rafts to get to the other side…the side I had just come from. Oops. So I backtracked and found what I missed.

In the third shrine, I learned the Ascend ability. It lets you pass through solid objects directly above you, and come out on top of them. It almost looks like you’re swimming through solid rock. 😛 But it certainly comes in handy, and it’ll really help out when exploring the world!

Recall

With three shrines complete, I headed to the Temple of Time to meet up with Zelda. She shook my hand and taught me the Recall ability, which can reverse an object’s movement through time! So if a log falls from a mountain, you can reverse its movement so it goes back up! Of course, it’ll eventually fall again, but you can use this ability in some helpful ways.

An object reverses course.

I didn’t have the strength to open a large door at the temple, but Rauru told me there is a 4th shrine on this island that I needed to complete. He marked it on my map, and I headed there and quickly completed it, using my new ability.

I then returned to the Temple of Time, where I saw a brief cut scene before diving down to the mainland…Hyrule Kingdom. I explored a bit, but I’ve barely scratched the surface. (Literally, since I’ve only just landed on the surface.) 😛

First Impressions

I’m still very early into the game (about five hours), so my journey is just beginning. With the abilities being different from those in Breath of the Wild, it’s going to be fun exploring the world in completely different ways.

The Ultrahand ability is probably the most significant change so far, because creating tool (or even vehicles?) with it is going to be a lot of fun. It’s going to let us be creative in the things we make, how we use them, and how we overcome various obstacles.

I’m already enjoying the game a lot, and I’m sure my interest level will grow more. I always seem to have a “warming up” period with any new game, before I reach a point that I don’t want to stop playing. So I’m not totally addicted just yet, but that may be coming soon. I’m looking forward to exploring, making some fun machines with Ultrahand, (hopefully) getting a sailcloth, and finding some proper dungeons.

I’ll probably be playing Tears of the Kingdom for many months to come, if not years. I hope you’ll return for future updates, and future videos as well. See you next time!

BOTW #29 – Shrine 120!

Earlier this week, Nintendo announced a full title (Tears of the Kingdom) and release date (May 12th, 2023) for their next Zelda game (previously known as Breath of the Wild 2). I’m really looking forward to the game, but I figured it was about time to finally get that last shrine in Breath of the Wild.

I generally don’t like using guides unless I’m really, really stuck on something. But after 5.5 years of playing BOTW without finding that last shrine, I felt like that qualified as “really stuck.” 😂 So I found a map that showed all of the shrines, and I scoured it for several minutes until I found the one I was missing. It was in the Gerudo area, between the highlands and the desert. So I headed there, but I initially didn’t see anything.

Sand. Just sand.
Never gonna run around and desert you.

But after exploring the area a bit, I found a big hole and dropped down into it. (It’s the valley that leads to the Yiga Clan hideout, but that’s not where I needed to go.) Exploring the area from down below led me to an altar that had never been used!

Finding the last altar.

Note: Because the shrine wasn’t exposed, only the altar, my Sheikah sensor did not beep to indicate it was nearby.

I had actually been afraid the last shrine would be something very difficult or time-consuming, like defeating every Talus or Hinox in the game. So I was relieved to see it was just something I overlooked…even if it was hard to believe I’ve missed it for over five years!

Anyway, the sign said to offer a shining blue stone. A sapphire didn’t work, but my next choice (a luminous stone) did the trick. The 120th shrine rose up out of the sand, and I entered the Sho Dantu Shrine. The hint was “Two Bombs,” and I joyfully solves the puzzles to complete my last shrine. 💣💣

Using bombs in the Sho Dantu Shrine in Breath of the Wild.
It was a blast.

The monk gave me a spirit orb, but he also had a side quest for me! It was easy, though: I just had to go to the Forgotten Temple for my reward.

**SPOILER ALERT** If you don’t want to know the reward for completing all shrines, you probably want to stop reading this entry now.

Okay, still here?

So I got to the Forgotten Temple to claim my reward. There were three treasure chests inside, which gave me a cap of the wild, a tunic of the wild, and trousers of the wild. Basically it’s Link’s traditional outfit!

Link wearing the hero of the wild outfit in Zelda BOTW.
Nostalgia much? It’s like a link to the past! 😉

While I was there, I also exchanged my final four spirit orbs for another heart container.

With eight months to go until Tears of the Kingdom, I may not be posting any more BOTW blog entries. (It’s still possible, but maybe not likely.) So I figured I should post my game stats for (perhaps) one last time.

  • Completion percentage: 59.88%
  • Shrines: 120/120
  • Shrine quests: 42/42
  • Side quests: 76/77
  • Korok seeds: 418/900
  • Hyrule Compendium: 363/385
  • Rupees: 39,806

Also, I no longer plan to purchase the DLC. But I will certainly be back next May with my Tears of the Kingdom progress! Hopefully the game won’t get delayed any more. 😛 But here’s the TotK trailer if you’re interested:

BOTW #28

I recently realized that I went through all of 2020 without playing The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild. I was determined not to let that happen again in 2021, so I’ve played the game several times throughout January and February.

After some aimless wandering initially, I decided to return to the previous shrines that still had treasure chests waiting to be found. So I teleported around, knocking out about half a dozen such shrines. In almost all cases, the treasure was a weapon or a gem, neither of which I had a particular need for.

In Kakariko Village, I spotted a woman running in the evening. I followed her home, where she (her name is Lasli) was talking about bugs. She wanted to see some fireflies, but she was afraid to go out at night. This opened up a new side quest! I released some fireflies into the room, and that completed the quest!

By Firefly's Light: Complete

That was my 74th side quest completed. What makes some of these quests so difficult isn’t the tasks themselves, it’s being in the right place at the right time to trigger the quests in the first place. I still have three more side quests to go, somewhere out there in the world…

Once I tracked down all of my remaining shrine treasure chests, I began a more thorough search of villages, ranches, and areas around towers. As I glided down from Hebra Tower, I actually discovered two new named areas I hadn’t visited before: Tabantha Village Ruins and Pondo’s Lodge! It’s amazing to me that I’m still finding areas I haven’t been before, despite spending hundreds of hours in this world.

At Pondo’s Lodge, I played a few rounds of snowball bowling (or snowling). It took me several tries before I got a strike. And when I did, the only prize was a disappointing blizzard rod.

Snow bowling, aka snowling, in The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild.
All that work for just a simple weapon? Spare me.

A bit later, I ran onto the Tabantha Bridge, followed by a fox and a wolf. The fox did some weird, glitchy-looking movement and it almost fell off. And then the wolf did fall off. Surprisingly, it was unharmed by the drop.

Just outside of Gerudo Town, I ran into Bozai again. Even though I may not have mentioned it in the blog before (long ago), I previously got the sand boots from him. But now he had another side quest for me, for snow boots. He needed to see a(nother) picture of the eighth heroine’s sword. So I headed up to the Gerudo Highlands and (eventually) found the large sword (again). When I showed him the pic, he finally gave me the snow boots…completing my 75th side quest.

The One I’ve Been Waiting For

For a long time now, there is a shrine that I’ve known about but haven’t been able to access. I never specifically mentioned it in the blog, because I didn’t want anyone to comment and spoil it for me. 😛 It’s the 2nd one near Kakariko Village. Up on the hill, the altar is clearly visible, and I’ve long figured that I needed the orb in Impa’s house. But Impa’s granddaughter Paya was always guarding it, and I could never find a way to take it.

But that changed when I dropped into Impa’s house the other night. Seemingly out of nowhere, Paya had a red exclamation mark next to her name, indicating a new quest!

Paya: This is awful... (!)

I didn’t realize at the time, but apparently the firefly quest above was a prerequisite for unlocking this quest. Anyway, she told me that the Sheikah heirloom (the orb) had been stolen! My task was to investigate by asking about rumors and questioning a couple of local villagers.

Both of the villagers in question denied knowing anything about it. But as I walked around at night, I spotted a guy with a very suspicious speech bubble that said “I wonder if anyone knows.” So I sneakily followed him, and he went up to the altar!

I won’t completely spoil the exchange that I witnessed, but I ultimately won a fight that gave me access to the orb. So I was finally able to enter the shrine I’ve been wondering about for years. It was one of those shrines where it says you’ve already proven your worth, so there’s no real task inside. Just walk up and complete it. I have now completed all 42 shrine quests!

Of course, one shrine still remains. And since there’s apparently not a quest associated with it, it sounds like I may not get much (if any) help in finding the thing. It could be anywhere, and it will probably take some luck (and lots of exploring) just to track it down.

Here’s an updated look at my stats as of February 2021:

  • Completion percentage: 55.88%
  • Shrines: 119/120
  • Korok Seeds: 369/900
  • Shrine quests: 42/42
  • Side quests: 75/77
  • Hyrule Compendium: 362/385

Almost four years in, and I’m still enjoying Breath of the Wild. Amazing game.
