Stardew Valley #7 – End of Spring

I’ve finally returned to Stardew Valley for another play session.

Day 23

I got a letter in the mail telling me that the Flower Dance is tomorrow. I then went to work in the mine for the most of the day.

Day 24

I headed to the forest west of town for the Flower Dance today. I chatted briefly with everyone that was in attendance.

Haley, at the Flower Dance: I'm practicing my dance moves... It needs to be perfect.

Once I was ready, the mayor started the festivities. Six girls (wearing white dresses) and six guys were in the center, slowly wiggling dancing towards each other. It lasted about 35 seconds, and then the festival ended. It was cute, I suppose, but very underwhelming.

Day 25

Today, I took a home-grown cauliflower over to Jodi. Fulfilling her request completed a quest, and my reward was 350g…nice!

Jodi: Oh, that looks so delicious! Thank you, this is just what I wanted! It's going to be perfect for my yellow curry.

The blacksmith processed a geode of mine, and it contained a dwarvish helm.  I donated it to the museum, and that earned me some melon seeds as a reward. Then I worked in the mine until night fell.

Day 26

Robin sent me a letter today, telling me she can expand my house to include a kitchen. I would then be able to cook some food! Sounds nice, but I can’t even afford to expand my backpack again, let alone my house.

I worked in the mine once again, reaching level 10 for the first time. That unlocked the elevator there, so I can quickly jump back down to this level again next time.

Back at my farm, I cleaned up my property a bit before sleeping for the night.

Day 27

The blacksmith processed two more geodes of mine, and they contained some malachite and celestine. Both of those were new to me, so I donated them to the museum. I got another new reward, a standing geode. It’s furniture, so I put it in my house. It doesn’t seem to do anything though, so it’s kind of a bore.

Day 28

I went up to the community center today and donated some items. I was able to complete the spring crops bundle, which unlocked another scroll in the boiler room.

Down in the mine, I reached level 15…unlocking another elevator stop. I still need to get down to level 40 so that I can complete a quest that I got early on in the game. 😛

Since I found some cherry bombs, I tried to blow up a wall that supposedly leads to the railroad. It didn’t work, however. Maybe I’ve been playing too much Zelda, the way I’m thinking bombs are always the answer. 😉

Blowing stuff up is a blast.

After that, I returned home, shipped a bunch of stuff, and went to bed. And with that, that (finally) completes my first spring in Stardew Valley. Summer will arrive the next time I play, although I’m not sure when exactly that will be. 😛

If you’re a fan of the music in Stardew Valley, Amazon has the original soundtrack available. See you next time!

Stardew Valley #6 – Scarecrow & Furnace

I know I’ve been playing Stardew Valley at a snail’s pace, but at least I’m playing it occasionally. I’m trying not to put it on the back burner completely (like I’ve done with Xenoblade Chronicles X, Pikmin 3, and many others). 😛 So let’s get into it.

Day 18

After watering my crops, I finally crafted my first scarecrow. I earned 100g for completing the “Advancement” quest. I put the scarecrow out in my field, and you can actually talk to it! It said “I haven’t encountered any crows yet.” 😛 I just can’t decide if that’s really cool or very creepy.

He doesn’t even have a brain yet!

I spent the rest of the day mining and then returned home about 9 p.m.

Day 19

I got a letter in the mail from Jodi today, asking for fresh cauliflower. Even though I accepted the quest, I didn’t have any to give her.

I tried to do a little fishing, but I didn’t actually catch any fish. I did catch a nice variety of trash, though. A broken CD, a Joja cola can, and some algae. Delicious! 😛 But as I explored, I found something else as well: Robin’s lost axe!

I caught up with Robin at the saloon in the evening. Even though she was dancing with her husband, I was able to give her the axe back. (Shake that axe!) I earned 250g for completing the quest.

Day 20

I spent the day mining and didn’t get much of anything else done. But I did acquire enough copper ore to build something tomorrow…

Day 21

Using copper ore and stone, I crafted myself a furnace! I wasn’t sure where to put it, so I stuck it in my house next to my fireplace. I’m sure it’s completely safe to sleep in the same room where I smelt metals. I just might need to open a window or something. 😛

My new quest was to smelt some metal. Unfortunately, that meant I needed more copper ore again! Oops.

I stopped at the blacksmith’s shop to process two geodes, and one of them contained 3 copper ores! I also donated an Earth crystal to the museum before going into the mine. Once I got what I needed, I returned home and smelted my first copper bar! This completed another quest, although there was no reward for this one.

Day 22

I headed over to the adventurer’s guild and purchased a wooden blade (a level 2 sword) for 250g. This should make my slime-busting a bit easier.

I then went into the mine to test it out (and do some mining while I was there). When I was done, I headed back home for the night.

I’d like to upgrade my tools, buy a chicken coop, expand my backpack again, and do many other things. But everything seems to take so much money, and often, lots of ingredients. Stardew Valley is fun, but it’s a very slow grind to get anywhere.

Stardew Valley – Evil Morris

It’s been a while since I’ve played Stardew Valley. That’s not to say the game isn’t fun, because it definitely is. If you’ve been following this blog for a while, you just know that’s how I am. 😛 I often get distracted with other things, and I don’t always return to games promptly. My backlog is embarrassingly large. 😛

But I made sure to play some Stardew Valley last night, to at least provide an update before the holidays arrive (when I’m likely to have even more distractions). 😛 So, let’s get into it.

Day 14

I knew exactly what I wanted to do, so I made a beeline for Pierre’s. Once the shop opened, I went inside and spent my 2,000g on a backpack upgrade. I now have 24 slots to hold things, which gives me a little room to work with. The default 12 slots are mostly taken up by tools, and a few basic materials I didn’t want to completely discard. So now I have some breathing room.

I wanted to buy some new seeds while I was at the shop, but I only had enough money for a couple. One thing I don’t like about this game, is that a seed is literally just one seed. In Harvest Moon games, one seed purchase actually gave you enough for 9 spaces. But here, buying (and planting) seeds is a slower, less convenient process.

I then headed over to the mine, where I spent most of the day. It’s nice to be able to actually keep the things I find, now that I have space to hold them all. Once night fell, I stopped at the saloon before heading home.

Day 15

Today, I went over the museum and donated a topaz and quartz. For donating a total of five items, I earned some cauliflower seeds as a reward. After the blacksmith processed two geodes of mine, I also donated a petrified slime and some limestone.

Seven items on display in the Stardew Valley museum.
Am I making progress, ore what?

I again went to the mine and stayed until night. When I returned home, I planted some seeds and then went to bed.

Day 16

I made a point to finally figure out something that had been bothering me in this game: I didn’t know how to separate stacks of items! If I wanted to ship an item, I shipped the full quantity. If I discarded an item, I discarded all I had!

But the answer is to press the Y button while a stacked item is highlighted. It separates it into a separate spot in your inventory, and you can keep pressing Y to use the new spot as a new stack of that item. The controls in Stardew Valley aren’t always intuitive, but I’m glad I finally figured that out. 😛

I got a letter in the mail from Pierre today, telling me that he now sells fertilizer at his shop. He told me to swing by to see if I can afford a few dozen boxes. Ha! He clearly doesn’t know how broke I am, especially after buying that rucksack upgrade.

My first stop of the day was at the museum, where I donated an amethyst. Then I headed over to Pierre’s and saw an unexpected cut scene. Morris came in, and offered all of Pierre’s customers 50% off coupons for JojaMart! How rude.

Morris: Come and get it folks... coupons for 50% off your purchase at JojaMart! All the customers rushed over to him, took the coupons, and left Pierre’s. This dude is stealing customers and trying to put Pierre’s out of business. Apparently Morris is the villain of the game. But after he left, I noticed the back door was open, so I went through. Several women were gathering in a room, but a smaller room off to the side caught my attention…the altar of Yoba?!

Altar of YobaI’m not sure what that’s all about, but the women were apparently having an exercise class. They were jogging in place, stretching, jumping rope, and so on.

Robin: My arms are strong... *pant* but my legs need work... *gasp*I walked around town a bit before returning home.

Day 17

I spent much of today working on clearing up my property. I need 300 pieces of wood to repair a bridge on the beach, so I started chopping away. But once my energy started getting low, I went into town. After chatting with some people, I went over to the community center.

I donated some items and completed the spring foraging bundle. My reward was 30 assorted spring seeds. Also, two new scrolls in other parts of the community center were unlocked. So now I have even more work to do. Fixing up this community center is going to take a long time.

Crab Pot BundleIt was getting late by this time, so I headed home.

Just a note about my Stardew Valley coverage: While I will continue to post blog entries (although they may not be frequent), I’ve decided to stop posting Stardew Valley videos–for now, at least. There didn’t seem to be as much interest in them as I hoped. I may reconsider once multiplayer is added to the game in 2018.

But for now, I really don’t have a clue how the online play will work. For example, will time still advance as it normally does, or will time freeze when you’re playing with friends? Will it have USB keyboard support for chatting? Will there be multiplayer mini-games? If it ends up being anything like online play of Animal Crossing, it could be fun. We’ll see.

In case you’re interested, Amazon has a bunch of Stardew Valley merch, like this T-shirt and a Junimo plush toy. I don’t have any of the merch myself, but it looks cool.

Happy holidays, and I’ll see you next time! 🙂
