The Island and Swimming (Day 6)

I noticed another house going up just south of my own house. Big Top will be moving in tomorrow. I’ve never had Big Top in the earlier games, but the three superheroes (Big Top, Kid Cat, and Agent S) are definitely some cool characters to have around.

Sign: This spot reserved for Big Top's new home. -Nook's HomesI then headed south, to the dock. As expected, Kapp’n was there, ready to take me to the island! He does charge 1,000 bells for the round trip, but that’s okay.

Kapp'n: What's that? If ye want to head to the island, it'll be 1,000 bells per round trip.As expected, he still sings about cucumbers…

Kapp'n, singing: Oh, cucumber, you're not a pewcumber.…and other topics as well.

Kapp'n, singing: Oh, silently, stealthily, secretly, I toots much more, more...Several members of Kapp’n’s family can be found in the shop there.

Grams: Don't be sneakin' up on an old woman like that! Nearly scared me outta me shell! But then I want out to explore the island. At last! Animal Crossing has bananas!

A banana on my island!I had to borrow a wet suit, and then I could swim!!

Me using a wet suit to swim in the ocean! The island has summer bugs, so I borrowed a net (you actually can’t use your own because Kapp’n keeps your equipment until you return to the boat). I caught a number of summer bugs on the beach and on palm trees.

When I was done there, I signed up for the shellfish free-for-all tour. This is one of the games that Tortimer hosts. You have five minutes to catch shellfish by diving underwater. The goal was to catch three of them, and that’s exactly how many I caught.

You found a pearl oyster!Because I met the goal, I earned one medal.

Tortimer: For meeting your goal, you've earned 1 medal!Back at the shop, items can be bought using those medals as currency. They actually don’t accept bells there. A wet suit is available for 40 medals. If you buy it, you can go swimming back in your own town. I definitely want to get one of these, but it may take a while.

Grams: I'll give it to ye fer 40 medals.I then headed back home.

Riding Kapp'n's boat back home at night. With my mini-vacation over, I needed to get back to work. I am the mayor, after all.  My development permit is complete and I can now start my mayoral duties. There are two main things I can do right now. One is to enact ordinances. You can make your town a night owl town, where stores are open later and animals stay out longer. Or you can have an early bird town, which is just the opposite. You could also choose to have a beautiful town or a rich town. There is a 20,000 bell fee to enact the ordinance though, and I was a couple thousand short.

Isabelle: To enact an ordinance, a processing fee of 20,000 bells is required.Isabelle: Of course, you can't just enact any old ordinance you feel like enacting. That would make you a dictator! The other thing I can do as mayor  is to begin public works projects. You can choose various town upgrades; I looked at the list and decided a bridge was the most urgent need.

Isabelle: OK, Mayor Jeff! Please lead me to the spot where you'd like to place the cobblestone bridge!I chose a spot near my western waterfall. Lloid the gyroid is placed at that spot to accept donations. The bridge will require 128,000 bells before construction can begin.

LLoid: Hey, contribute to a campaign to fund a cobblestone bridge! With my mayoral duties done for now, I went shopping. I bought my fortune cookie at Nookling Junction, and I got fortune #50.

Fortune: Sometimes a sword is just a sword. And sometimes it's a pretty girl. (#50)I redeemed it and got a Fi mask. Great, now I can annoy myself.

Me wearing a Fi mask.I wanted shop at the Able Sisters, but they were already closed. Wow, they close at 9:00 p.m.?  They close earlier in each game. On GameCube, they stayed open until 2 a.m.  In City Folk, they closed at 11 p.m., and now 9:00.

Sign on Able Sisters: [CLOSED]. OPEN / 10:00 a.m. CLOSE / 9:00 p.m.That’s exactly why I need to convert Forest to a night owl town. So I sold some things and then returned to town hall. I quickly signed the Night Owl ordidance into law.

Isabelle: OK! So you want to sign the Night Owl ordinance into law? That’s all for today, check back tomorrow for another update!

Day 5 – Meeting Tortimer

I started up the game this evening to see my newly upgraded house.

My newly upgraded house, as seen from the outside. In the mail, I got a letter from Isabelle with a paw-print wall attached. I went inside my house to check everything out.  Of course, it’s nice to be able to rotate the camera to look at your house from any angle.

The inside of my newly expanded house, including the paw-print wall that Isabelle sent me.I then went back outside to talk to some neighbors and take a walk. Aurora told me that Tex and Yuka spend a lot of time arguing, and then making up.

Aurora: They seem to spend a lot of time arguing with each other and then making up.And Yuka asked me to catch a snail for her.

Yuka: They're everywhere, but I just can't net one for myself. What's wrong with me, Jeff? Then, I went to meet and greet my newest neighbor Fuchsia. She’s a deer.

Fuchsia: Whoa! A visitor already? Pleased to meet ya! I'm Fuchsia! I just moved here! But then she called me “girlfriend.” EXCUSE ME?

Fuchsia: You should come over again once I'm all settled in. See you then, OK? Girlfriend! That’s not the way to make a good first impression.

After stopping by Rory’s house for a quick hello, I headed to the beach. I met an old friend there, Tortimer!

Tortimer: ...Say now? What did I want to see you about? He told me that he lives on a tropical island now, where it’s summer every day. He said he told the person in charge (that would be Kapp’n) to start making stops at Forest starting tomorrow. So I’ll get to visit the island tomorrow! Sweet!

Tortimer: I already told the person in charge to start making stops in this town starting tomorrow! After catching a few fish, I then returned up the ramp. Gabi asked me to make a delivery to Yuka, who was standing about five feet away. You can see her in this picture.

Gabi: Hey, can I ask a favor? I bought a present for Yuka, but I'm too busy to take it over there. So I walked over to Yuka and gave her the present. She thanked me and gave me a rugby shirt.

Yuka: That style could really suit you. It's a rugby shirt! After that, I made a stop at the museum. After donating some new fish, I sat to watch a few of them swim by.

Sitting and watching some fish go by in the aquarium section of the museum.I then went over to Nookling Junction to buy today’s fortune cookie. I got fortune #5, which I redeemed for some hero’s pants. Next, I went to the Able Sisters where they had a Makar’s Mask! I bought it.

Me wearing a Makar's Mask that I bought at Able Sisters.
I got a new leaf.

Back in town, Aurora came up to me and gave me a jade plaid tee, for absolutely free. You didn’t have to do that, Aurora. You were already my favorite.

Aurora: I hope you like your new jade plaid tee, b-b-baby!Gabi was nearby, so I talked to her. She was itchy, so I decided to help her out by catching the flea that was on her.

Gabi: Ewww! Did you just find a flea on me?! Yuck-yuck-yuck!

Gabi: I swear I bathe all the time!
Sure you do, Gabi.

Yuka came up to me and said she heard I was a freshman mayor.

Yuka: As far as rumors go, that's not half bad. I've certainly been called worse. And after talking to all of my villagers tonight (and paying Reese to take my garbage), my approval rating finally reached 100%!

Isabelle: According to a recent citizen survey, your approval rating is 100 percent! Wow!Unfortunately, it will still take at least a day to be approved for my town development permit.

Isabelle: The approval process will take one day at the very least, but it could take up to a few days. That’s all for today, but check back tomorrow as I visit the island. With any luck, I’ll have my development permit too.

Day 4, Part 2 – Fishing for a Bigger House

I started up the game again tonight, determined to earn enough money for that next house expansion. So I did some fishing…and as I fished, I caught two cans. Interestingly, Reese at the Re-Tail store actually charges you money (80 bells) to dispose of cans! You’re charging me to recycle? I think you have this a bit backwards, Reese.

Reese: Oh, an empty can? I can't buy this item, so you'll have to pay a disposal fee to dump it...So I just hung on to my cans for now and continued fishing. I saw Yuka also fishing…but not catching anything.

Yuka fishing.I caught a red snapper in the ocean, so that helped a lot. And with five minutes (and five bells) to spare before Nook closed up shop, I made my payment.

All loans on this account have been paid in full.So I went in to see Nook and he confirmed the payment.

Tom Nook: Yes, yes, I have to say I do feel a slightly larger home would suit you much better, hm?I’ll now owe him 98,000 bells, but my house will be expanded again by tomorrow morning.

Tom Nook: The work will be fully completed by tomorrow morning. I'm so sure you must be very excited, yes, yes! That’s kind of crazy that my house only lasted this size for one day. But the generous money rocks make it easy to make money in New Leaf.
