About Halloween
Halloween is a holiday event in Animal Crossing: City Folk in which you must find Jack (the czar of Halloween) and give him candy in exchange for spooky furniture. You'll also want to avoid your villagers, because they will play a prank on you if they catch you and you don't give them candy. When Is Halloween?
Halloween takes place on October 31st each year, starting at 6 p.m. and lasting until midnight. How to Get Candy
Candy can be purchased at Nook's shop throughout the month of October. You can also acquire candy by trick-or-treating (described below), or you can use any leftover candy you have from Bunny Day or Festivale.
How It Works
Jack can be found somewhere in your town (outdoors). You must speak to him and give him candy to earn exclusive spooky furniture. But unfortunately, any outdoor villagers will also be dressed as Jack. How to Tell the Real Jack
There is an easy way to tell Jack from your villagers: Jack won't chase after you if you approach him, and the villagers will. So you'll want to avoid your villagers (or risk losing an item) while hunting for Jack.
Getting Pranked
If you speak with Jack or an outdoor villager, you must give them candy or they will prank you. They can turn your clothes to trash (a moldy shirt or a patched shirt), put a pumpkin head on you (potentially replacing a hat/accessory you were wearing), or destroy an item in your inventory by turning it into a jack-in-the-box. So it's important to keep candy with you at all times.
Wearing a Costume
If possible, you'll want to wear a costume (a matching set of a shirt and hat/accessory that forms a complete look) on Halloween. When buying an item at Able Sisters, Mabel will tell you if it's part of a look. There are dozens of looks available, and here are just a few examples:
- Cat: Cat cap + cat top
- Cavalier: Cavalier hat + one-way tee
- Frog: Frog cap + frog top
- Mummy: Dressing + mummy shirt
- Ninja: Ninja hood + burglar's shirt
- Red hero: Red zap helmet + red zap suit
There are two main benefits to wearing a costume on Halloween. Firstly, you'll be immune to outfit changes from Jack or villagers if you don't have candy. So they can't destroy your clothes and leave you wearing rags (a moldy shirt or a patched shirt). The other benefit is the ability to trick-or-treat.
Trick-or-Treating
If wearing a proper costume (as described above), you can trick-or-treat at the homes of indoor villagers. Speak with them, and they'll give you a free piece of candy that you can later give to Jack (or an outdoor villager, if necessary). Best of all, this trick can be repeated! Just leave the villager's house and re-enter to get more candy over and over!
It's a Trap!
The absolute best tip I can give about the Halloween event is to trap your outdoor villagers by digging holes around them. If possible, do this before 6 p.m., when they won't chase you down. It can still done during the event, but it's more difficult. Make sure you have plenty of candy with you in case they catch you. But when they're trapped, they can't chase you. This makes it MUCH easier to find the real Jack, and the event goes much more smoothly (and quickly) this way.
No Spoilers
Candy never spoils, so you can safely store your candy for other events. Multiple events use candy, so it's a good idea to keep your extras for future use!
Spooky Furniture
There are ten furniture items, one carpet, and one wallpaper you can obtain during Halloween. Unfortunately, Jack can give you duplicate items, so you'll need to find him more than 12 times to complete the set. Here is a list of all the items you can obtain. Tom Nook will pay 10,310 bells for each piece, even the wallpaper and carpet! This is one of the most lucrative events in the game.spooky bed | 10,310 bells |
spooky bookcase | 10,310 bells |
spooky chair | 10,310 bells |
spooky clock | 10,310 bells |
spooky dresser | 10,310 bells |
spooky lamp | 10,310 bells |
spooky sofa | 10,310 bells |
spooky table | 10,310 bells |
spooky vanity | 10,310 bells |
spooky wardrobe | 10,310 bells |
spooky carpet | 10,310 bells |
spooky wall | 10,310 bells |
As for the other items you can obtain on Halloween, most of them can't be sold to Tom Nook (although he will dispose of them for free). But the jack-in-the-box and pumpkin head do make nice Halloween decorations!

moldy shirt | 0 bells |
patched shirt | 0 bells |
pumpkin head | 0 bells |
Bonus Tip!
In a video comment, I was informed of a helpful tip from Monk (mrMonkTOC): After Jack vanishes, your character may very briefly turn and look off to a specific angle. This is a hint as to which direction Jack has traveled! If you don't see your character turn, you may already be facing the general direction of Jack's next location. When you know where to look, this will save you even more time! Good luck, and happy hunting!
